A Literary Evening with Cathal Ó Searcaigh

The NUI Galway Literary & Debating Society will be hosting a literary evening with Irish Language poet, Cathal Ó Searcaigh at 8pm on Thursday November 12th in the Siobhán McKenna theatre in the Arts Millennium Building, NUI Galway.

One of the best known and most studied Irish Language poets alive today, Cathal Ó Searcaigh was born in Donegal in 1956 where he still resides today, at the foot of Mount Errigal in County Donegal's Derryveagh Mountains. He is known to locals as ‘Gúrú na gCnoc’ which literally translates as ‘Wise Man of the Hill’. He has published many volumes of poetry, with his selected poems, “Ag Tnúth leis an tSolas: 1975-2000”, winning the Irish Times' Irish language literature prize in 2001. He was also awarded the Seán Ó Riordáin Prize for Poetry in 1994 and the Duais Bhord na Gaeilge in 1995.

More recently he published Caiseal na gCorr: Poems and Photographs (2002), and Seal in Neipeal (2003), an account of his travels in Nepal. His play Oíche Ghealaí, an adaptation of the Salomé story, was produced by the An Grianán theatre in Letterkenny in 2001. Selections of his work have been translated into French, Breton, Italian, German, Russian, Danish and Japanese, and have also been set to music.

The evening promised to be a wonderful experience for lovers of poetry and enthusiasts of the Irish language alike. Those in attendance will have the rare opportunity to hear Cathal Ó Searcaigh read some of his own work and speak on the subject of his literary accomplishments.
