Sexual Liberation Debate, hosted by NUI Galway Literary & Debating Society “This House Believes ‘Slut’ is not an Insult”
The NUI Galway Literary & Debating Society will be hosting a debate on the subject of sexual liberation at 7pm on Thursday November 26th in the Kirwan Lecture Theatre on the main Arts Concourse of NUI Galway.
In the 1980s, Ireland saw a rise of feminism and in particular, sex-positive feminism. This movement believed that sexual freedom is a key component of women’s freedom and thus a key component of the feminist movement. They particularly opposed any attempts to control sexual activities between consenting adults. On the other end of the feminism spectrum, we have the idea that by promoting sexual freedom and allowing for women’s sexual expression we are opening the door for pornography and harming the progress of women’s freedom. Nowadays, some women show their confidence and sexuality by dressing provocatively. By personifying a stereotype, are women really expressing themselves sexually? Does this approach encourage a healthier attitude to sex in modern culture? Or is it right that women should be allowed to express themselves in any way they wish, regardless of how little clothes that involves? Is this not the ultimate defiance of social norms and as such, truly liberating? And as regards sex, shouldn’t consenting adults who enjoy having sex with many partners be free to do so? Lit & Deb explores these issues, come along and see them laid bare. Speaking at this debate will be noted writer in the field of feminism Ellie Levenson and twice winner of the 'Best British or Irish Blog' Zoe Margolis.
