Welcome to our website; this is the digital hub of our society. If you don't already know, the Lit & Deb is the oldest and biggest society in NUI Galway, where every single student and staff member automatically becomes a Lit & Deb member simply by enrolling in the university. We are heading into our 165th year and we are as excited about it as the first committee 164 years ago. Getting involved is easy; we have two main events each week. On Tuesday nights at 7pm, we hold debating workshops where you will get to practise and learn public speaking and the dark arts of debating competitively from experienced pros. Every Thursday night of the semester we have our main weekly event. It takes place in the Kirwan theatre in the Arts Concourse building - our spiritual home - at 7pm. This is where we debate the issues of the day, by inviting guests in and giving students the opportunity to voice their opinions. If this isn't enough, we also host literary events. Some of the more famous visitors to our society include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Prof. Noam Chomsky and President Mary McAleese who have all come in recent years. It's a great opportunity to have some fun, go away on some great trips (Botswana, Thailand, Amsterdam and Turkey to name a few!) but most importantly, to make friends. So if you think the Lit & Deb is for you, come along and see what you think. Céad Míle Fáilte!
