This week, Lit & Deb prepares to bestow the honour of one of its highest accolades, the title of Speaker of the Year, onto one of its members. Coming through from various qualifying heats such as Internal Mace, the DCU IV and Maidens, each of the six speakers has well earned his or her spot in the final. This week, Lit & Deb debates the issue of euthanasia. The act of euthanizing a person implies the alleviation of the pain of serious illness and the future of the same by ending that person's life. The debate about the justice implied by this action centres around the question of whether or not death is in any way better than any earthly torment. The lack of any knowledge of the events after death prompts the unwillingness to allow a person to undertake this step. As well as this, the rationale of the person is often compromised when the bleak nature of the illness and pain implied therein affect the psyche, thus making their decision one which may be afflicted less by consideration than it otherwise would be.
