HIV Panel Discussion

Venue: Kirwan Theatre

Date: Thursday, 16th February

Time: 7pm

This week, Lit & Deb discusses the stigma and misunderstanding that has hindered the discourse surrounding HIV. HIV affects approximately 0.6 % of the world's population and has been deemed pandemic by the World Health Organisation. Due to the fact that the virus does not present symptoms in others and due to the intimacy required in order for transmission to take place, HIV was, and sometimes remains, something of which people are fearful and therefore towards which they are hostile.

Despite this, the progress of recent scientific research has greatly improved the level of knowledge about the virus and the methods by which it may be treated. In order to, albeit to a smaller extent, further this enlightenment, Lit & Deb is hosting a discussion between various HIV experts who will hold a discussion about the topic that will then open to any questions from the floor.

All are welcome to attend. This is a debate in association with Deloitte.

Civil Partnership Debate

Venue: Kirwan Theatre

Date: Thursday, 2nd February

Time: 7pm

This week Lit & Deb debates the civil partnership bill and the question of whether or not it satisfies the needs of Ireland's gay community. The motion before the house is 'That this house believes the civil partnership bill does not go far enough'. Though viewed as affording many new liberties to same-sex couples, there is wide-spread criticism about its lack of inclusion for the same in comparison to heterosexual couples, particularly in relation to parental rights. Four guest speakers will be debating the topic initially before the debate is open to contributions from the floor.

All are welcome to attend what promises to be a heated discussion and an informative evening.

Feminism Debate

Venue: Kirwan Theatre

Date: Thursday, 12th January

Time: 7pm

This week Lit & Deb embraces and debases feminism on opposing sides of the house. The motion reads 'TTH believes it's no longer a man's world'. The proposition and opposition panels are entirely male and entirely female respectively and consist of Lit & Deb committee members, including one who has recently returned from his stay at the World University Debating Championships in the Philippines. As the first debate of the semester, Lit & Deb is going to show you what Thursday nights are all about and introduce you to the high standard of its speakers.

All are welcome to contribute to the discussion on the night by making a speech of their own. Hope to see you all there for what promises to be a heated, intriguing discussion.
